From the files of Random Childhood Memories: I couldn't have been more than 8. My family was on vacation and I remember my parents wanted to take us to some sort of roadside attraction where they recreated the story of the Wizard of Oz. I think the sign said something like "Join Dorothy on her journey to Oz!" or something like that. I can't tell you how it was because I refused to go.
In my kid brain I had some facts. I knew the story of the Wizard of Oz. I knew how Dorothy got to Oz. I knew the devastating power and unpredictability of tornadoes. And there was no way I was going to get into one of them, no matter how safe my parents said it would be. Frankly, I thought they'd lost their minds. How could they assure me that a tornado would be safe?
The Youth Group packed boxes at Northern Lakes Second Harvest Food Bank tonight. We packed 70 boxes of assorted food. Thanks, Mike, for bringing along your cameraphone so we could get these photos!
Minnesota FoodShare, a program of the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches, has named United Church their Outstanding Congregation for the March Minnesota FoodShare Drive for hosting our second annual Music to Feed the Soul Concert for Hunger Relief this past March. At that concert, in which people from all over the community and many congregations participated, the community raised over $1600 for our local food shelf.
Jerri Swardstrom, Nancy Christensen, and the Missions and Social Concerns committee deserve many thanks for organizing this event.
We were nominated for this honor by Jan Larson of the Two Harbors Food Shelf.
United Church has a tradition of being very active in issues of hunger relief. This past fall we had our umpteenth annual Dinner and Auction for Hunger Relief where we raised $2700 for local, regional, and world hunger relief. Our youth group also volunteers at our regional food bank, as you can see here.
