An update on the Circle process at United: We (about 12 of us) met in the church after the first Friday potluck and plan to do so again next month, on February 3. (Circle starts between 7:00-7:15).
What is circle? People ask. There’s no simple answer because the circle is really in the experience of circle. It cannot be easily described. Here’s my attempt: Circle is an opportunity to speak from the heart and listen deeply. The process can be very free-flowing, or specific to a topic. It’s not a discussion, and we’re not trying specifically to solve problems. What seems to be growing in this United Church circle is the intent to understand and connect with one another on a deeper level than we necessarily reach in other activities. Among other things at our first circle, the desire was expressed to share more deeply about our faith and the life that follows from that faith. We also talked about our openness as a community, to each other and to outsiders. I think it is safe to say that participants left the circle with a strong sense of belonging and connection, as well as the desire to continue and expand the circle. If any of these ideas are intriguing to you, or if you desire a greater sense of belonging at United, please consider coming to our next circle. There is never an obligation to speak! I’m sure anyone who came to the last circle would be more than happy to answer questions or discuss it further. Or, just call us (Mark and Katya) to learn more.
